Today’s focus:

  • Don’t Ever Quit!

Message:

Failure Is Not An Option!

According to the Oxford dictionary:

Failure is:

  1. lack of success

  2. the omission of expected or required action

  3. the action or state of not functioning:

Although I never want to focus on anything negative, but let’s take this apart for just a moment.

Failure is the exact opposite of success and it happens when we omit expected and required action. This action of functioning or moving in the right direction is necessary. It’s right in line with Felisha Orchid’s definition of failure: Quitting!

You guarantee failure when you quit. It’s not possible to succeed at anything if you quit.

You don’t fail when you take action. You don’t fail when you are moving in the right direction, even if you aren’t getting the desired or expected results. As long as you don’t quit, you will never fail. You will continue to discover what doesn’t work until you figure out what will work.

How should you define those uncomfortable moments when you aren’t getting the desired results?

Learning opportunities. It’s called research.

According to Quora:

According to Rutgers, Myth Buster: Edison's 10,000 attempts, "The source of the story about Edison trying thousands of experiments or materials is probably an 1890 interview in Harper's Monthly Magazine."

The exact quote by Edison:

"I speak without exaggeration when I say that I have constructed three thousand different theories in connection with the electric light, each one of them reasonable and apparently to be true. Yet only in two cases did my experiments prove the truth of my theory. My chief difficulty, as perhaps you know, was in constructing the carbon filament, the incandescence of which is the source of the light."

The Rutgers article also describes another quote by Edison in a 1910 biography as it relates to Edison's later work on storage batteries.

The book quotes Edison's friend and associate Walter S. Mallory:

"I said: 'Isn't it a shame that with the tremendous amount of work you have done you haven't been able to get any results?' Edison turned on me like a flash, and with a smile replied: 'Results! Why, man, I have gotten lots of results! I know several thousand things that won't work!'"

The Thomas A. Edison Papers of Rutgers University is probably the most reliable source of information on Thomas Edison.

Let’s begin to change how we think about the journey we are on. Forget about overnight success. It doesn’t exist. Even when it appears that way, there’s just so much more of the story that you don’t know. Either they or someone else has put in the time and effort. It doesn’t happen out of nowhere.

When preparation, plus hard work meets opportunity you get success. Without any part of that equation you’ll have a breakdown.

Preparation & Hard work + Opportunity = Success!

Repeat after me:

I will not fail because I will not quit! For me there is no such thing. Failure Is Not An Option!
